When it comes to the states, will it just be a direct release or will WS get thier paws on this awesome anime?

I really hope it comes to AS, it could possibly be the next Cowboy bebop of AS.

I imagine that Geneon will want to get it on TV and it probably would be a good fit for AS, but I'm not sure if Williams Street will put a lot of effort into getting it, provided they haven't already burned the bridge to Geneon by letting Lupin III fail.

Lupin failed by Trigun worked and Geneon has expressed no harsh feeling towards AS over Lupin. They realize that it was just too old and should have been brought over years ago.
There are several things that come into play here and most vary depending on wether or not G4TechTV's relaunch of Anime Unleashed gains the block some much need popularity. If it does then Champloo could go either way (by that I mean it could go to Anime Unleashed or Adult Swim) but at the moment Adult Swim is the best known mature anime block on television and has the most exposure. Geneon knows that Champloo should be on TV and should be very accessible. G4TechTV may be more wide spread than just TechTV but CN is on most cable packages and even on basic cable in many areas (such as mine).
So it depends on which block looks more promising by the time it's dubbed and ready to be on US television.
Honestly I think Champloo is a lock for Adult Swim in 2005 but things may change... I don't think Champloo fits Anime Unleashed though... it has nothing to do with technology, but they may decide to take a chance on it. You can be sure of one thing though... Wililams Street wants it AND bad. It's Watanabe's, it's got phat beats, and it's got lots of workable action. Simply put... its perfect for Adult Swim and could possibly dethrone Bebop (and boy will it be nice when Champloo and FMA dethrone Bebop and Inuyasha respectively).

people said that about Wolf's Rain.

Seems a bit...early for speculation.
Nonetheless the FIRST episode looked fantastic, and certainly the ties to CB from a marketing perspective should raise eyebrows in Atlanta when it is pitched.
But CN isn't the only viable player on the block anymore. I'm sure G4 will also be very interested.

AS and Geneon are on good terms. Geneon explictly said so at SakuraCon 2004.

The tone of Champloo looks to be completely different. Anyway it's too early to pass judgement on either of these series. At least for me it is...

I'm not exactly sure how Anime Unleashed can "take a chance on it" if the show doesn't fit their programming agenda. If the show has nothing to do with technology, then there's no reason to expect it to end up on Anime Unleashed...
...unless G4TechTV decides to pull a Sci-Fi Channel...or an MTV...or an AMC...and air content that doesn't fit their agenda, of course.

The old tech-oriented criteria for Anime Unleashed is history. Now, I think the driving criterion for the block on G4TTV is going to be whether an anime already has spawned games or could be developed into a game.
G4 is a gamer channel and it bought TechTV, not the other way around, so I think the TTV content being ported over to the new merged network will become more and more game-oriented as time goes on, with Anime Unleashed among the first blocks to reflect this shift in emphasis. (^_*)

Just because it fits their new agenda doesn't mean Cartoon Network can't outbid G4TechTV for a show.

It has a better first episode than...alot of anime including Bebop. Hopefully that's a positive foreshadowing. If it stay this good or gets better, then AS would be fool for not trying to get it on.

Reviso!
Just because it fits G4TechTVs new agenda doesn't mean Funimation wouldn't rather have FMA on Cartoon Network than G4TechTV.

Just saw the first episode of this today and i must say im damn impressed. If this series keeps up with this much stylistic and kickass pace it's gonna be a big hit. From the first episode i can assume this is gonna top Bebop, I like Bebop a lot but Samurai's are more interesting to me than gunfighters. Not to mention it seems that two equally skilled badasses are the main characters.
This i think is easily gonna be the best anime of the year. FMA is good but i think Champloo has more potential to be great. Also the opening is very refreshing.
Cant wait to see it hit Adultswim

I'd be astonished if WS didn't already bag this one months ago. It's just too obvious.
I'd also be astonished if it didn't debut before its run ends in Japan. How many episodes is it anyway? 26?
Karl Olson
05-24-2004, 03:22 AM
It's 26 as far as I know. I think regardless of whether it's like Bebop or Wolf's Rain, it's ultimately got cool-ness all over it so far, and if it maintains that, it'll be on AS. Coolness seems to be the ultimate factor in any purchase, not actual story, or so it might seem.

After Mezzo TV, I could probably take any drop in quality. Of course, it does seem that Watanabe and the gang had a great deal of Bebop already produced before the show even hit the airwaves, soooo...
That would require AS getting an anime that didn't move at a snail's pace...

If AS does bid for Champloo (or other popular anime), that'll be a good sign that they are going to stick with anime for a while. I'd hate for them to look at the recent ratings, say anime is a loser compared to comedy, and then dump it in favor of more self-produced or outside comedy. (^_*)

Pacing doesn't seems to affect what AS buys. Cool factor does seem to though. The almost over-atmospheric, style driven WHR and WR come off as very cool, in as much as the much more speedily-paced Bebop and FLCL come off as very cool. Champloo oozes cool in all aspects. Therefore, my bet is that Champloo will be on CN, even if the pacing slows to a crawl (unlikely, but possible.)

Yeah Champloo isn't really moving all that slow...no real worries in that department.

Right now, it has the potential to be cooler, yet more story-oriented than Bebop, but until I see another episode or two with the same attention to providing the complete package, I won't say it's close to being definete. The music (out of side of the rapper on the OP) is really nice (that OST is getting bought ASAP by me,) the fights are beautiful, as is most of the rest of the animation, and so far, the pacing, characters and story are interesting from what I make out (hard to really gage some of that when every word of Japanese you know has been absorbed through anime.) But I'll hedge my bets and not declare perfectly awesome until seeing a good chunk of it, and even then, it'll need a great dub to back it all up if it does rock.
