I found this website called unitednorthamerica.org (http://www.unitednorthamerica.org/), a few mouths ago while looking for some infomation on the International Relationship between the United States & Canada. The website goes into detail about a possability of the 2 North American nations merge to become 1 New Nation. Anyway, if you have the time check out.

It's only wishful thinking. :p
It seems to depend on who you ask, and how. Ask an American if they'd like to have 13 new States join the Union, and they'll say, "Sure, why not? Those Canadians are nice people." Ask the Canadians if they'd like to join the U.S., though, and most will say they'd rather die first. ;) Ask an American if they'd like to become part of Canada, on the other hand, and they'll just laugh. A lot. Then walk away slowly.

Damn straight! :D As a kid I always thought it'd be cool if Canada, the US, and Mexico all made a "super-country", but ultimately, that shouldn't happen. If anything, the closest thing to becoming one country should be sharing a common currency (much like the EU and the Euro) and common security techniques, which I will admit that Canada has been somewhat lax with, particularly when it comes to the immigration of so-called refugees.
Then you have to realize that all current Americans would then be forced to learn french as the official second language, and every product in the land would need labeling in two languages. And then there's the debate over using metric or imperial - and let's be honest, though Canada is OFFICIALLY metric and the US is OFFFICIALLY imperial, both countries use the opposite a lot, too.
And then there's the issue that most Canadians would never want to be thought of as "American" overseas (cuz they consider it an insult - not that they're American per se, but that they're assumed to be something other than they are). And many Americans would probably care less, and just be happy that the whole "Manifest Destiny" thing finally came about.
Anyway, both countries are strong countries, great allies (Iraq war notwithstanding), but they do not need to form a single nation, because despite being so very similar in many, many ways, the finer points are very different too.
So...yeah. I can see a common North American currency emerging - neither the Canadian or American dollar, but a unique new type that features past human figures and symbols that mean a lot to BOTH countries, and hopefully for the sake of everyone, a stronger sense of national security on Canada's part. But that's as far as I'd like to see it go.
I still say Canada should've taken Alaska while we had the chance, though. :p

Based on the website content it looks like it was made by red neck Yankee Americans.
Canada and America is black and white.
Canada has winter.
America has summer.
Canada uses the metric system.
America uses an out-dated imperial system.
Canada has hockey.
America has football.
Canada serves under the Queen of England.
America serves themselves.
Canada has great Molson beer.

Nah, none of that would be necessary. The U.S. has no official language, and the U.S. officially uses both customary (domestically) and metric (internationally, and on the federal level). The 50 States, however, have decided to make langauges official in their States... for example:
42 of the 50 States -- English only
Hawaii -- English and Hawaiian
Alaska -- English and three Eskimo languages
Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Florida -- English and Spanish
Vermont -- English and French
Puerto Rico -- Spanish (I know, it's really a commonwealth)
Each of the 13 former Canadian provinces would make their own language choices when they became States in the U.S. I can see it now...
11 former provinces -- English
Nunavut -- English and Iqualit
Quebec -- French only at first, then later they'd add English to increase tourism :p
And here's a thought:
The SUPER U.S. of this alternate reality would then have 50 + 13 + Puerto Rico + Guam = 65 States! And that's not counting unincorporated territories! This SUPER U.S. would be the largest nation on Earth in both area and fresh water, with the largest military, largest economy, and largest supply of raw materials on Earth all at the same time. If you think the U.S. is dominant now...

Good point. Cuba came this close -> <- to becoming a State in the U.S. in 1898, after the Spanish-American War. And today, many Cubans in exile in the U.S. say they'd love to see Cuba become a U.S. State one day. But then we'd have 66 States! Wrong. Quebec was not French when it was first founded. Know who were Quebec's first people? The Inuit. "Quebec" isn't even a French word. It's Inuit. Later on, the French took over and now we're Canada's French province. Just goes to show everyone that the Bloc Heads didn't do their homework.
Also, Louisiana is America's only French State. If we separated, we'd be America's second French State, but that will never happen. We're Canadian and will remain Canadian. We're a bilingual province.
As for becoming "one nation"? No, thanks. I'm a Canadian, born and raised and will die one no matter where I'm living. Oh, I love America. Don't get me wrong. :)

Indeed. I stand corrected. So, when are Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories going to finally become Canadian provinces? For that matter, wasn't the Northwest Territories supposed to change its name to Mackenzie (for the Mackenzie Mountains) once Nunavut split away?

I heard something about that...because now, the good ol' NWT (which covered all three current territories, plus a good chunk of ALL of the provincial area from Lake Superior to the Rockies back in the day), is a shadow of its former self, and is hardly "north west". If anything, it's "north central". :p
Anyway, the reason why these three territories aren't officially provinces is because they don't have the population base to become an official province. I know that, at most, all three territories combined have a population of about 150,000. Yeah, Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province population wise, also has a similar sized population, but the difference is that those people are far more condensed, on an island no bigger than, say, Long Island, NY. It's all about the people per square kilometre, and with 150,000 in an area about half the size of Canada (and a fifth the size of the continent), that's a mighty, mighty sparse population.
Bottom line, keep Canada and the US seperate. But if they ever did join, hypothetically, what would they call themselves? I doubt the citizens of either country would want to cave in and be annexed to the other...so calling it "The United States" or "Super US" or something would be kinda lame.
Don't shoot me for this, but - the "United States of America" is actually quite a boring name, if you think about it. It's not a place, it's just an amalgamation of places that take up a land-mass in the half of the world known as "America". It's as if Canada was called "The United Provinces of America". Again, it's a legit name, but it's something I've always wondered about. You couldn't simply call it "America" because that refers to everywhere on the continents of North and South America. (What's the origin of that word, anyway?) And I was always curious as to why citizens of the US were officially "Americans"...TECHNICALLY so am I, so are Mexicans, Cubans, Brazilians...
I know it's just a bunch of technical language and stuff, but really, it's something I've always wondered about.
Bottom line, keep the two countries seperate. If we can't settle on a good leader for either country now, what makes you think we could after a merge? :p

On a somewhat related note, about ten or so years ago, I remember there was a big deal made of Quebec breaking away from Canada. There were essentially two options to this: The first being total independece (which was being taken seriously), the second was joining the US at least as a territory, or perhaps even complete statehood (which, as one can tell by most of the Canadian responses in this thread...;) ) wasn't being taken seriously.

A good question. The answer comes from the history of the region.
Simply, At the Time of it's creation, the US was the only* soverign nation in the Americas at the time.
There were no Mexicans, there were "Spanards" there were no Canadians, there were "British" (and some "French"). The US being the first to officially break from their originating country, became the first soverign nation of the Americas. As their country was in America, they were referred to as Americans. However, the other Colonies in the region were still referred to by their originating nationality.
I hope that clears up why the citizens of the US are referred to as Americans (Although for all intents and purposes, Canadians are considered Americans.)
While we do have disagreements, Some nations (such as China) don't understand why we aren't the same country. From their perspective there is no difference.
Personally, I really don't care. I mean People from Boston are just as Similar yet Different as people from Austin, and the People of Canada are the same way. (More similar than different)
*(Native Americans were/are also Soverign, however unfortunately for them, their culture was not prepared to assert itself and as a result, "They don't matter for the purposes of this explanation.")

It was nine years ago (I was three years away from being able to vote) and there was no way that we'd become our own country because the US would have bought us. If we DID separate, I'd be living in Ontario. Well, probably not me (I would have worked enough after school to be living on my own) but my parents would be. We were gonna move to Ontario if the separatists won. There'll be a big thing about the second referendum next year, I bet.
The biggest problem that the separatists have is that they're not looking at the big picture, only the "here and now".
B.C. decided to jump on the band wagon and try to separate. Why not? Quebec spent millions of dollars over nothing so why not another province? Now, the West wants to separate. Before we think about becoming one nation with the US (like I said before, no thanks), we need to get ourselves back together as one.

Yeah, I remember this - some nutcase figured that BC and Alberta should seperate from Canada, since everyone west of the Ontario border was pretty much ignored by Ottawa during the Chretien years. (It's true...I know only a third of the country lives in the four western provinces but still, to give the paltry maratime provinces way more acknowledgement and representation is a tad unfair.) Regardless, I would have not wanted to seperate from Canada, because by far and large, I love the country too much.
Quebec also wanted to seperate back in 1995, that's true - but I doubt it would ever happen any time soon, because since then, the sepratist movement has died down considerably. I never heard the idea that they'd join the US, though - never under serious consideration, anyway. That just wouldn't make sense. And besides, then the Maratime provinces would be totally isolated, and those four provinces can't really survive on their own as their own country, unless they change a lot.
Hey, maybe Winnipeg should seperate, just for kicks. :D

Controversial topics
Technically, posting on controversial topics (like politics and religion) is against Toon Zone rules. However, we do allow it at the Cafe. Just observe the following guidelines:
1. Argue, don't bash. If you have a point to make, make it in a reasonable and reasoned manner. Remember, you ought to be trying to persuade your fellow posters, not intimidate them.
2. Be calm. Remember, the people you are arguing against are not evil; they merely have a different opinion. You must to treat that opinion with basic amount of respect if you are going to have any hope of getting them to change it.
3. Be substantive, not merely satirical. Politicians as politicians are a proper target for ridicule, and we here at Toon Zone make no brief for them. However, mocking a politician is not the same as arguing against his or her positions, and is a cheap substitute for them. Note also that mocking a politician is a good way to anger and inflame other posters who like, respect, or admire that politician. Remember, do not seek to inflame or aggravate your fellow posters.

They need to do their homework. As a French Canadian living in Quebec, I have things to tell them. They need to update their "Quebec Factor" section with "the Inuit were the first people in Quebec and that 'Quebec' isn't even a French word. The Inuit were forced to live up North due to the fact that the French and British came over and had their way with each other thus moving all the Inuit to Northern Quebec." They also should know that hard core separatists are now kicking themselves because they know they have lost and now are regretting not having any English. They know that a separation will not happen ever, no matter how much millions they spend on it.
I can provide them with many facts. The hard core French won't be alone if Quebec were to separate. Do people forget that Louisiana is America's French State?

I of course find this project, which smells more like a quest for American hegemony over the continent more than any sort of idealisticly motivated unifacation. I'd rather not see it anyway. Despite a lot of similarities, Canada and the United States are fairly culturally distinct and I don't know if the merger would keep Canadian culture from being overwhelmed by meainstream American "culture" (sorry, I really tried not to, but I can't use that word culture in association with American without a tinge of contempt).
Besides, it just wouldn't feel right if there weren't any Canadians.
I know I may have pissed a few people off last time I posted, hell it seems like I can't express my views without apologizing for them later and I have a tendency to just let what I feel fly, I don't try to offend, I just have this nasty tendency to not march in lockstep with established dogma, that's just how I am and if I offended you, I'm sorry
It's not, failing to march in lockstep with established dogma, as you say, that was the cause of discontent. I think perhaps an absence of sufficienti nuance and restraint were at the heart of the upset.

Our flag is younger than Newfoundland, which is the oldest settled land in North America but only became a province in 1949.

The only good thing I can see coming from something like this is that I wouldn't need a passport if I ever decided to visit friends in Canada. :p
But ehhh, the problems involved in such a merge would definitely outweigh the benefits, I think. I'd hate to think of, for example, what would happen if the US health care system tried to take over Canada's. >< That...would be bad.

It would be the other way round. We have free health care. America would want our health care.

You know how cool WE are: we have two colours on our flag; we're lucky number 13 now; we spell favourite, colour and neighbour with the u; we're on the metric system; we spell words like metre and theatre with the e and r reversed, and so on. We OWN you. So, I am now bending over. Now KISS my Canadian ass!! :D

Hehe. Anyway, all jokes aside, I wonder why on that site they proposed merging Prince Edward Island with another province because it's "so small". If Canada were to be absorbed into the U.S. as 13 more States (as we all know, will never happen), why would this be a problem? After all, Rhode Island and Delaware are just as small as Prince Edward Island...

Off hand I'd write it off to jingoism or maybe the people who run things are from Rhode Island and Delware. Either way, I don't think too much thought has gone into accomdating the Canadians as much as it's gone into making them Americans (as in people from the U.S.A).

Well, it was sorta... weird.
Something I would think would be troubling is we were to, for some insane reason, unify the countires, is incompatibility of political systems. I'm suspect that American conservatives and Canadian conservatives aren't the same thing or are at least not entirely ideologically compatible. I'm not sure if the Canadian liberals (the ideology, not the party) would face similar incompatibility or not. I thinkg the Canadians perhaps borrowing more from European concepts of the terms. In any case, I only have about half of the story on that. Perhaps a few Canadians could help use construct a useful comparison?

I found this website called unitednorthamerica.org (http://www.unitednorthamerica.org/), a few mouths ago while looking for some infomation on the International Relationship between the United States & Canada. The website goes into detail about a possability of the 2 North American nations merge to become 1 New Nation. Anyway, if you have the time check out.
i hope someday their dreams come true.
cause some parts of america .. especially where i live.. just suck. and canadian ideals merging with our own.. certainly would be an improvement.

It's hard to. America's a powerhouse. What we invented, you take and claim as yours. What we help with to make popular with the rest of the world, you claim it as you've done all the work (the dubbing of Sailor Moon for example), CAPCOM Japan going through CAPCOM USA to get us to work on such series as Resident Evil/Biohazard, Onimusha and Dino Crisis, but America claims as THEY'VE done the work. Hardly any work has been done on your part.
With the separation business still going on up here, we should concentrate on getting ourselves as one before we would ever consider merging to become one country, which I find stupid, anyway. I'm a Canadian, born and raised, will DIE one. I love the US, but I'm not American.

No thanks, but I do prefer Canada to the U.S. Not many Americans who feel that way though. It's lonely here.
so what? We get no mexico in it?

Definitely yes. How the United States failed to invade British-controlled Canada in 1812, and how Canada somehow became independent later, bothers me. I would be in favor of a united country, regardless of what would happen with leadership. Too bad all of that is pure fantasy.

Chinese is slowly becoming our third official language. Chinese Canadians are our largest minority (I don't like using that word "minority", but I can't think of another word at the moment).

Errr.. we French Canadians aren't a minority. I used "minority" in this context as a different race of people and did I not say "slowly"?

Here's what I want to know, and which a Google of the Internet couldn't find for me: Why does Quebec refuse to sign the Canadian Constitution of 1982? What's in it that Quebec considers so bad for them? And what does Quebec do in Canada's government right now? Are they doing what the Constitution provided for, just refusing to sign it? It's such a confusing situation (at least from an American point of view... Is Quebec 'in' or 'out'? How can they be both at the same time???)

If you talk to a separatist, they'll tell you that they're from Quebec and not from Canada. They live in the Land of Oblivion. Quebec is a province in C-A-N-A-D-A. God.
You talk to the rest of us, who are proud to be French Canadian, you'll know that we're Canadian.
