I'm down in a town called Summerville in SC. Gas used to be about $1.30 a gallon. Over the past few months, its risen to $1.68.

I know this might not be much to you so, that's why I'm asking everyone. I wanted to get a good view of the prices in different areas.

Well I'm not old enough to drive but my mother does and she's always complaining how it goes up at the local gas station.

They used to be the ones with the low prices but they hiked it up to $1.69-$1.79 or $1.89...

Up in Boston (or it's suburbs, like Marshfield) my uncle said (I think) $1.89- $ 2.00 somthing dollars...I think. I know it's higher there.

I heard in Nevada it's up to $3.00 something!

Tommy Lawson

I heard in Nevada it's up to $3.00 something!Actually, since I live in Las Vegas, I can tell you it's averaging $2.13 in the city. However, once you get on the highway, of course, it gets really expensive. At Primm (state line between California and Nevada on I-15), last week it was $2.43 a gallon at the Chevron for unleaded! (I didn't fill up there of course, just saw the price) I don't even want to imagine what even more remote "last chance" gas stations are charging in the desert.

$1.97 for the cheap stuff as of yesterday. It shouldn't be that high, but since the jizzbuckets in Phoenix own the gas stations here they jack up our prices too.

Tienshin

Generally, I see the prices in the 1.75 - 1.95 range. The extremes tend to vary by a few cents, depending on the gas station and where it's located.

It's been around 75-80 cents Cdn around here lately.

...this is per litre, mind you. :p That'd be a bit less than $3 per gallon, then. But, converted to American dollars, that's about $2.25 per gallon. So, a bit more than what the rest of you have said. Maybe it's due to taxes and stuff.

I'd say it's more between 0.75-0.85 cents per litre across our great nation. Where I live, it's currently at 0.834 cents per litre.

Howdy,

Out here in central Jersey, we're looking at about $1.69 - $1.75 a gallon for the 87 octane. I think the expensive stuff is about $1.89 or more.

I tell ya, our decision to buy a Honda Civic Hybrid is looking better and better :). Admittedly, the other choices were a MINI Cooper or a Pontiac Vibe, neither of which are slouches in the MPG department, but I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be letting 3 weeks go by between fill-ups.

i had to buy gas on three separate occasions this weekend (road tripped to wisconsin)

first stop...$1.79 per gallon
second stop...$1.82 per gallon
third stop...$1.74 per gallon

so, technically that means prices are declining :D

Actually, that price is per liter...if you converted it to gallons, I think the price would be, well, not so envious. ;) Sorry, I'm too lazy to do the math.

In west TN, prices have been hovering at about $1.76 or so for regular unleaded. It used to be really cheap here compared with the rest of the nation: now it's about the same. I now have fond memories of the Love's gas station in West Memphis, Arkansas I saw some years back that had gas for 98 cents a gallon. Swear I'm not making that up.

Sometime within the last three years we had one station with gas for 99 cents a gallon. Now we're well above the national average. I'm sure it wasn't that uncommon.

for regular (not fancy type) it varies between $1.58 and $1.65 depending on how close to the highway you are...

I remember buying gas for less than 80 cents a gallon once back in the mid-late 90's. And even then my history teacher would regale us with stories of when he was our age spending 15 cents to fill up his truck and complaining about how expensive it was... also, how he could buy steak dinners for a nickle, so I'm not sure how accurate that was...

Here in the Md. suburbs of DC, I'm seeing most prices in the 1.79-1.85 range for regular unleaded.

Either way, damned expensive.

In Savannah, GA, the average price for regular gasoline is around $1.73-$1.76 per gallon. Only one gas station I could find has regular at around $1.68 per gallon.

Also, I think that the USA, despite all the gas price hikes, still has the cheapest gas on the planet. I saw it on the Daily Show, but I want to make sure that fact is true or not.

guinaevere
04-20-2004, 11:56 AM
You're right, Vyse. Here in the states, we're doing pretty well for gas prices. Cheapest there is.

Last week, I heard a comparison of (US) prices since the 50's, but in 2003 dollars (so, taking inflation, salaries, cost of living, et cetera). The prices today, are pretty close to what they paid in 1950. Which is amazing, considering the quality of gas is much better today, with better refining and processing requirements.

The average price of gasoline during the 1950s was about $1.80 in today's money source: The New Republic Online (http://www.tnr.com/easterbrook.mhtml?pid=1418)

The highest was in 1981, after Jimmy Carter's administration (misery index, anyone?) at just over $2.80 a gallon (in todays money).

There's a great chart here (http://oregonstate.edu/Dept/pol_sci/fac/sahr/gasol.htm) showing the cost over the years. I'd post it in the thread, but it's a big honking image...

Southeast Michigan gets you $1.79 average for regular unleaded. Luckily, there's a station by my house that usually sells regular for around 7 cents below the average. I filled my tank up there yesterday, and it still cost me damn near $20, though.:(

The gas prices in my area are around $2.00 and up. Once when my mom put gas on her car, she paid $2.01 for Mid-grade in a BP/Amoco station in my area. A Mobil station in my area closed down a month ago and I don't know why, maybe it was for high gas prices or something like that.

I was in the Twin Cities last weekend and gas there ranged went from $1.98 on the Friday I arrived, to $2.08 the Sunday I left.

Since I live in Virigina, gas prices are way too high. So me and my mom usually go to Manassas to get the cheapest gas. Even the cheapest gas is too expensive. For regular(That's for my car) it's 1.95 per gallon and for premium(For my mom's car) it's 2.04! That's not fair!

Considering in the UK we pay around 75-85p per litre (around $1.30-40 I think) that means we're probably paying around $6 or more for a gallon... so stop whinning! :D While things in the UK are a little more expensive - they don't relatively compare to the ridiculous price of fuel!

Russkafin
05-25-2004, 05:52 PM
It's $2.17 for the cheapest gas here in Rochester NY.

What really blew my mind is, there was a bit on the news the other day about the price of gas... and someone said it's still a good deal because a "gallon of milk is $4.50." Yeah, maybe if I filled my car with milk, that would be a problem... but I don't think you just put *one* gallon of gas in your car at a time... I doubt that would get me from the gas station to my house! I thought that was ridiculous that someone compared the two.

And, Delthayre, I am definitely driving less AND complaining more.

Gas right now in Orange County, southern california, is anywhere from 2.26-2.49'ish....for the regular cheapest gas(!) I hate it, I totally have to watch where I go now because gas prices are such a serious issue on my income right now :( For a brief shining moment it was down to like 2.04 and I was estatic, and then suddenly it started rising without any real warning like the news normally gives us. I can't believe how much it's spiked. Such a pain, especially with summer here. All you people complaining about rises in gas prices that still leave you under 2 bucks should really stop whining and be thankful you don't live in So Cal ;)
