It just struck me a while ago after I said, "gank" to someone and then explained the word, that nobody says it anymore besides myself and my group of friends.

Does anyone remember or still use the word, "gank?"

Gank: To take or to snatch away. Can also mean to be hurt or hurt someone.

Anyone still use this or remember this word?

Any other forgotten slang that you wonder what happened to it?

Perhaps it's because I've got the vocabulary of a 17 year-old, but most of the slang that I've picked up over the years has stuck with me.

Though, I must admit, Mr Crichton, that I've never heard anyone use the word 'gank' before. Perhaps it was a regional thing?

I remember using "Gank" in the context JC pointed out like 10 years ago...and then it kinda disappeared. Probably due to the fact that I moved from the midwest to the east coast and encountered a whole new world of slang to learn.

Also, I remember using the phrase "g-move" (gank move) i.e: "OH SNAP!! Did you see what happened to JC? Someone pulled a G-Move on him and took his Sailor Stars lunch box!"

But some of the old terms stick around, "dope" is still somewhat common.

Other then that the only one I can think of is "tight", which was pretty much another way of saying something was cool, i.e. "Yo dawg, JC just drove by in his new ride with the BANGING Dayton's...that whip was TIGHT!!!!"

Yeah...

LOL!

I'm totally using "g-move!" in the future! Thanks!

As in, "Yo, G Gundam be the diggety, yo!" "Word."

Eg. "I got a grip of Beta series Magic cards and it's time to duel punk!"

I remember 'gank', and I still hear it used, infrequently. And how can anyone forget 'word'? Without 'word', how would you answer someone when they asked you if you were keeping it real?

Doh! you are dead on...also let's not forget the famous variation "word up" or the infamous "word to your mutha"

Anybody remember grip, meaning many?
Eg. "I got a grip of Beta series Magic cards and it's time to duel punk!"

Is "grip" old now, I still hear it from time to time, only in rap songs mind you, but maybe those were old CD's.

As in, "Yo, G Gundam be the diggety, yo!" "Word." Again, a lot of these phrases have stuck with me, so I can't really call it forgotten. Part of it is from having a good mix of urban friends down here 'round atlanta, and as I mentioned earlier, I often talk like I'm still in high school. :: shame ::

I don't use slang much in general, as anyone whose talked to me in person or through some mechanism of thar interweb could tell you, my use of language is to stiff and prolix to readily admit colloquialisms.

I've only heard "gank" in the context of shoplifting. And I stopped associating with shoplifters when I was in junior high. Those dang kids might still use it.

I use a lot of slang. I say "grody", which means gross. I'm pretty sure that's not used anymore.

And profanity. When did profanity become unfashionable?

- "hork": to steal something
- "ralph": to barf
- "melvin": a reverse wedgie (double ouch!) (honestly, I've only heard it in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey)
- "spaz": a doofus
- "doofus": a spaz :p
- "quiff": (see last two)
- "righteous": excellent!
- "tubular": great
- "nar": juvenile term I said in my juvenile years that I thought I had invented, then saw years later in a kids' Disney magazine!
- "bodacious": great
- "wicked": good. (well, I don't hear it much anymore, but I know some still use it frequently)
- "sick puppy": crazy/weird person. (haven't heard it for a while)
- etc...

"Sike" will never die. Ever. I won't let it.
"Dude" will be in the lexicon forever.
"Mug", used to describe a person, isn't used by anyone anymore except me.
I still use "gank".
Living in a predominantly white town has worked "awesome" back into my vocabulary.
I'm trying to work "wicked" into my vocab, in honor of Peter Griffin.

Some my sister and I like to say just to be randomly weird are:
"Fo shizzle my nizzle"
"It's off the heezy fo sheezy deezy"

I say "wicked" every now and then, like "That was wicked sweet" or even better: "That was wicked hella sweet."

I still hear people say "tight" as well.

My contribution is something my friend used to say: "bogart" as in "don't bogart the chips" i.e. don't keep them all to yourself.

I always thought it was spelled "psych" as in "psychology" because you played mind games with them... anyhow the only thing I say with any kind of regularity is "cool" although on occasion I do say "w00t" outloud, softly. But only when its really deserved.

I remember well "da bomb" and "she's so crazy" Ah early 90s slang. Here's some more I remember:

Rad/Radical (i was glad this one died)
Diggety (see above)
Dude (which I keep alive by referring to EVERYONE as dude to this day)
Duh! (still used, but not as badly as it was in my youth)
Like (like, i have like, the dumbest, like, way of talking!)
Sike (the teacher called your name for detention, SIKE!!!!)
Bama (I know this is derogatory, but i never knew what it meant)
Bounce (people used to say this to say " let's leave" they'd say "let's bounce" I HATED it)
bodacious (heard of it, but never heard it used)

I could probably list dozens, people really talked like morons when I was a kid.

Not that it matters, but I think it's "Psyche" as in to psyche someone out. Used like that, I hear that word all the time, especailly on sports shows, like "he psyched out the defender and drove in for the score!" or something...

But yeah, I remember when people would just say "Sike!" or "Psyche!" or whatever, kinda like Mike Meyers's "NOT!" or something... and no, no one does it anymore.

I still say "wicked," I only started using "sweet" once it had been around for awhile, I always hated "tight" and "the bomb", and a friend of mine has me almost saying "stoked." Whatever. It's really none of anyone's beezwax anywayz.

The sad thing is that within the next couple of years, "cool" will make it's way into this thread. I hardly hear it anymore, and I feel kinda old-fashioned when I say it. It's almost getting to the point where I have to watch where I use it. I'm pretty sure that it will soon become illegal in social settings.

Howdy,

Is there anybody else here old enough to remember when people used "tubular?" Or does nobody else want to admit that they know about the Valley Girl phenomenon that happened in the 80's?

Some great old 1930's slang can be found in Miller's Crossing (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0100150/). My personal favorites are probably, "What's the rumpus?" (what's going on?), "Go dangle" (get lost), and "Are you givin' me the high hat?" (are you dissing me?), although I never seem to use any of them in conversation

GANK?

Is that with a soft g or hard g?

I've never heard 'gank' ever. Maybe cuz I'm from the South.

I use to say 'jank' all the time, when you insult someone, you janked them.

'cool points' was big in middle school. If you did something stupid or clumsy we'd say you lost your cool points.

I never heard "gank" and don't think I want to.

I don't really use slang myself except "cool" "awesome" "whatever" don't think those will ever go away.

In grade school people used to say "PSYCH!" or "NOT!" after every sentence that was highly annoying.

I guess this is kinda slang in high school people would constantly use the phrase "I guarantee." Another one people would refer to pretty much anything as "guy." (ex. pointing to a penny and saying this "guy" over here)

I say my good man, you are looking "Dapper" today.
I was called dapper once, of course when you're the only guy in you school who dresses in a fedora and long black top coat, it attracts that sort of attention.

I've noticed I have a lot of odd sorts of slang derived mostly from madness contrived with my friends.

Most come from our favorite activity, which is making fun of bad movies (inspired of course by Mystery Science Theater 3000)

We have a sort of semi-sarcastic way of using, "seriously," that I can't really describe that was inspired by some riffs off of the character of Stanton in Journey to the Center of Time.

There's also, "I know this place backwards," which we use to suggest that we don't really know what we're doing. It's a line from the movie Neophytes and Neon Lights.

There are others, but they escape me.

I also have a tendency to exclaim, "ei yi yi!" frequently. It's a sort Pennsylvania German exclamation of exasperation I picked up from listening to the older people back home.

I've also picked up a tendency to use, "oy vey es mir," which I believe is Yiddish for 'oh, it pains me' as well as shortened versions of the phrase. I think this comes from exposure to the older, Yiddish-speaking parents of some Jewish friends of my father.

Does anyone remember the OVERUSED late 80s word "Dope"...

It could either used to say that something is great

"Did you see Vanilla Ice's video? That was dope, man!"

or it could mean weed

"Yo, I just bought some dope last night, wanna smoke it with me?"

At least in my area, the word "dope" has made a comeback of sorts, but people use it to make a sarcastic compliment.

"Yo, you're new sneakers are dope!" (Even though they're not)

Heh, I haven't really heard anyone say "gank" since the last time I listened to an Eazy-E album.

Also, did anyone mention "bogart"?I still say "bogart" all the time... that is if "bogart" still means the way we use it down here in the south. Like for example someone's "bogarting" if they're not passing it along... if you know what I mean.

BTW, I've noticed that a lot of slang words mean completely different things from area to area, like "skeet" for example.
