View Full Version : The utter neglect of Space Ghost...

Okay, three things have been pissing me off about SGC2C lately:
First, there's the circle of repeats. While that marathon with the old eps was refreshing, they've started playing the last four or five episodes over and over since then, when they have a library of 93 other episodes going back over ten years. What's up with that?
Oh, speaking of ten years, there's my second peeve. Space Ghost turns 10 on April 15, and we haven't heard of anything happening, not even an honorable mention for the first CN original series, and the first and only animated talk show. Judging by the lackluster promo for CN's 10th, I wouldn't be surprised if they ignored SG's anniversary altogether. Shame Shame.
Third, the humor has been getting more and more crude since Flipmode. I'm not saying that the new ones aren't funny, because the Dennis Miller, Busta Rhymes, and Triumph interviews were all comedy gold. However, it was better in the 90s, the didn't have to rely on constant swearing, or jokes about bodily fluids and sex. I am by no means some prudish soccer mom, I laugh at that type of humor all the time. It's just that I laugh harder at the toned-down, old-school Space Ghost humor we got before adult swim. Nowadays, it's like a PG-13 rated Cartoon Planet. If you don't see my point, watch "Self Help" (1994) and watch "Dreams" (2004) right after that. You'll notice that both episodes are hilarious, but you'll also notice that it isn't the same kind of hilarious.
Or maybe this whole post is BS and I'm just a whiny little space ghost fanboy.
Either way, thanks for reading.
You whiny space ghost fanboy. ;)
Too bad I agree with you. Less restrictions have made them sorta lazy I think. Some of the older episodes were really clever and creative ("Brillian #1 and #2, "Table Read," "Curling Flow Space") which made the show a nice counterbalance to the toilet humour on the other channels.
I don't know. I still find the show enjoyable but I can tell, like "Home Movies" that we've passed the glory days of the show by.

you'll learn that CN doesn't give 2 ***** about anniversaries.

Uh, I already know that they don't give two ***** about anniversaries. I learned that on CN's big 1-0. My point is, they SHOULD. I mean, come on. All that success and popularity from CN and they think a 30-second commercial is proper celebration? That's just wrong. The fact that SGC2C's 10th probably won't be given a second thought on the air is even more wrong.

1) Agreed completely.
2) Eh...I really wasn't expecting anything anyway. Most I would've expected would be a mention on the cards.
3) Actually I don't think the show has reached the realm where its purely reliant on that type of humor with the exception of the Triumph episode, which I didn't find enjoyable at all personally found to be one of the worst of the series...and perhaps Idlewild South, which I actually thought was pretty funny. But for the most part I think most of the humor comes from the classic SG randomness. Look at "Whipping Post" or "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"...aside from some swearing, there's not much of that brand of humor.
I can see your point, I just don't think the show has reached a level where its bugging me that much yet. Personally I thought this last season, with the exception of the aforementioned episode, was one of the show's best.

ANyone notice that Quizznos Commercial Space Ghost is drawn in flash and not a stock footage model?

Yeah, I noticed that. It's good in a way and bad in a way.
The good way is Space Ghost could end up with more positions in the actual show which would make him look better. The bad way, is that if they started flashing him in the show, it sort of takes away from that constant subtle comedy I mentioned earlier, my reasoning being that Space Ghost's limited movements and trademark poses are part of the funny, in my opinion.
Then again, this might be BS and I'm reading into it too much. Yeah, that's probably it.

last year i read a card on AS that said that the creator of family guy(Seth Mc Farland) would be on an episode. has he appeared yet? I miss SG periodically but lately ive been watching it, and they have shown nothing but reruns

Nah, they haven't done Seth yet. Should be a decent episode when they do, though. By the way, I like your avatar. I never miss an ep of Static. A fine piece of animation, it is.

I agree with you, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Honestly, I haven't even bothered to watch most of the new episodes. What bothers me is that Space Ghost was great without that sort of crude humor, and seems to be using it as a crutch now. Maybe it's just me, but the campiness aspect of the show has been replaced with swearing, and it just isn't funny anymore. Anyone can swear a lot, but I very few shows were as genuinely entertaining as the old Coast to Coast and Cartoon Planet.
At least there are occasional marathons and DVDs of the older eps.

I agree about the crude humor.
The bleeped-out words are getting excessive, although they have been used well on occasion. But too much of the bleeping is not only more mean-spirited, but kind of annoying.
"Idlewild South" was kind of uncomfortable to watch. There were the drugs for one thing, although I guess that served a purpose. But the vomiting and subsequent urination were disgusting. At least the urination was still slightly left to our imaginations. The episode was rather enjoyable, though, and some of the crude humor worked. Especially if you include the flagpole in the butt as crude humor.
"Dreams", of course, was where it got out of hand. Still lots of funny stuff, but some of it was quite unnecessary. I must concede that the "bang up the ass" stuff was funny, not because of the phrase itself, but because it was used in a Space Ghost kind of way.
Well, I guess, as you already said, the main problem isn't that the crude stuff isn't funny, just that SGC2C isn't really the proper vehicle for it. They don't need it, I guess. Save it for Sealab.
last year i read a card on AS that said that the creator of family guy(Seth Mc Farland) would be on an episode. has he appeared yet? I miss SG periodically but lately ive been watching it, and they have shown nothing but rerunsYeah, and Seth Green, and at least one other guest (and they actually did mention this in a promo that listed all the guests for this season -- didn't originally include Triumph). Those are held over for the next season, I guess.

SG is a show that doesn't need swearing, but does well with or without. I've been happy with the new episodes, though. I still have to memorize SG's bleeped swearing segment from "Whipping Post" too.:D

They're outdated. I remember during the end of last year they were playing old episodes where Hulk Hogan was talking about his "new" show called Thunder in Paradise. Because of the talk show format the episodes get outdated really quickly. For this reason I'm not sure a weekday run of Space Ghost would ever be feasible.

MM, that's a somewhat... dumb statement.
Okay, that's unfair. I actually CAN see your point, but it isn't a good one. That's the same as saying the 1994 episode "Self Help" shouldn't be aired because Dr. Brothers mentioned her "new" book, "Positive Plus", even though that episode is funny as hell. The fact is, most people flat-out don't care. And those who DO care should have enough common sense to know that Thunder In Paradise isn't new.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if they're funny, they're not outdated. It's just a rerun. Plus, they just showed "Whipping Post", where Dennis Miller mentioned that he did Bob Hope's 100th birthday the same day he was interviewed, even though Hope passed away in recent months. So your point is pretty much invalid. "Whipping Post", by your definition, would be "outdated" yet it's still being aired,
Therefore, there must be another reason why those eps aren't being shown, and if we ever find out what it is, it had better be a hell of a lot better than they're "outdated".

As with most shows, they only re-run the episodes from the most recent season. Sometime soon I suppose the show will either go into "syndication mode", where they show any episodes they want, or just be taken off the air for a while.
I never said it was a particularly good reason. But it's the way TV works in general. It's just more noticeable because the season only has 5 or 6 episodes.

I agree that the show is getting more obscene. I have still enjoyed the new eps allt he same. I do miss the old ones. Its a shame they havent shown them in so long.
