Maybe because a lot of us could relate to at least one of the characters, and the cartoon's got a lot of spunk for a show that's set in a regular suburban culdesac. Usually you'd see kids with superpowers or the culdesac being threatened by some evil force, that's what makes this show unique.

Why do I love EEnE:

The animation
The unqiue characters
The stories(I'm actually impressed that the writers were able write up such good stories when the show was limited by just the main characters, few settings, and one time period)
Double-D is soooo cute! :D

The stories kind of remind me of when I was growing up, with all of the things that I and others would do when there was nothing else to do. Well I didn't make scams but still.

Also, I really like how there is such a great motley of characters! The dumb moron, the brainy kid, the girl everyone has a crush on, and the girls who have a crush on you.

Some of the things I hear on the show are just random things - especially much of what Ed and Rolf say - but they're so memorable too.

Its quirky. Not as wholesome as "Peanuts". Not as crass as "South Park". Mix in some slap-stick, and its golden.

How do I love E, E, &E? Let me count the ways:

1) It reminds me of a cartoon version of MTV's Jackass or Buzzkill (which was an early version of Jackass).

2) The kids on the show remind me of the kids I knew when I was a kid.

3) It beats watching some of the cartoons that are on other channels these days.

4) It's not that bad, but the first couple seasons weren't that good. So it showed potential when it started and kept with it.

5) As CookieS said (to paraphrase): It's not as wholesome and bland as Charlie Brown, but it's not crude and crass like South Park (even though I like South Park)...and unlike South Park, Ed, Edd, and Eddy don't have to worry about stupid parents on the show b/c Ed, Edd, and Eddy's neighborhood don't seem to have any.

That's all for now.

Ed, Edd & Eddy is a good show, it's among the CCs' I can watch. It has funny characters and, as mentioned above, I'm surprised they could come up with so many stories despite Antonucci's decision of working just with the main characters and limiting the location and time of the show, but hey! it worked!

I also like the characters' personalities mainly because they're true. Every neighborhood gang had kids like the ones on the show, and I prefer those instead of shows that feature kids with "Adult" personalities (a couple of Klasky-Csupo nicktoons come to mind)

In short, I find the show to be a nice combination of "Peanuts" (the limited "no adults" setup), Hey Arnold! (the personalities of the characters) and "Looney Tunes" (slapstick humor).

You know, I completely agree in saying that the first season (not sure about the 2nd) wasn't that great of EEnE. Honestly, when this show first emerged, I couldn't stand it. But after grinning and bearing it a couple of times when there was nothing else on, it grew on me more and more about mid 2nd season or so.

You are all right about how in a neighborhood gang, each of the characters in EEnE are recognizable because we either were, or knew someone just like each of those characters - to a point:

- the sarcastic braniac (which was me when I was younger)
- the not so bright, out of touch with reality one
- the one who plays by himself with the imaginary friend..but not quite out of reality
- the egotistical loudmouth
- the girl all the guys had crushes on
- the girl who has a crush on one of the guys
- the boy who's not as tough as the others and plays better with girls
- the "bully" who tries to act mature
- the foreign kid who reminisces on his culture or from lessons of his family

The characters are very true to what life is like in a neighborhood. I definitely give praise to Danny and his crew for writing all of the episodes and keeping things evolving in a more humorous, yet somewhat realistic way...

Because it is at once the smartest and the stupidest thing on TV.

Actually, I fell in love with the Ed-boys the very first time I saw the very first promotional. It was a blank white background with the three Eds doing their three distinctive runs. There was no dialogue. The theme music played in the background. These words came up on the screen:

"For the past twelve months, we've been working on this project."
"This summer, we hope to finish it."

Or something like that. End promo. I thought that was brilliant!

If you don't like Ed Edd and Eddy just watch Rocket Power or any other show that depicts older kids (8-10) or tweens. There are some decent shows like Recess and The Weekenders to an extent, however I just fine Ed, Edd, and Eddy to be very true to those hot summer days when your young. I remember doing things to a more realistic level that go on with the Eds and kids. I knew kids like Kevin and Naz, me and my friends did idiotic things that wasted the whole day. That's why I love Ed Edd and Eddy it shows kids between 12 and 8 and shows them with innocence but also with a certain amount of realism and respect.

Also Edd is just like me... always wears a hat, is very sarcastic, smart, and the ladies love him... for some reason Edd doesn't have my ego though...

NOTE: when I say realism I'm talking about the characters and how they act, not the Ed's schemes which are more cartoonish.

"We talk about the now trademark 'wobble' effect in the Eds animation. I didn't want the show to become so slick, its a jab against CGI! The wobble effect reflects back on the cartoons of the 30s when everything was black and white and hand inked and to R.O. Blackman's work in the 60s. The wobble comes because when you're inking it's impossible to do it the same way twice so in effect we're utilising human error, its animation by mistake!"

Well I can say that this show ever since 1998 has started out like all the other cartoons cartoons, except there was two things diffrent, it was from a diffrent contry, and that the animation style make them a bit souless in apperince, including if they are getting battered, or crazy, but also in the process of these 5 years it has become one popular series that now beats out Dexters Lab, Courage The Cowardly Dog, and even Jhonny Bravo, but I can say that this series has alot of fans after awhile and now we have gotten 3 Eds Specials for the seasons and I am glad I am a huge fan of this series.

To Mods: I'm being a little more candid than usual in this post..

I absolutely hate the show... The animation is bad, and I just dont like it. I'd say I hate around 90 % of the stuff being shown on CN.

Also, another reason I dont like the show is that the characters and stupidity of the storylines (I'm not trying to offend anyone, if they can relate to this show:rolleyes: ) only make me think of WT (if you dont know what that means, you can pm me)
The fact that these kids act the way they do, and their mannerisms, in pyschology, would mean that they are neglected in some way, or it's just ignorance running thru the family. My two cents worth.

God that is soooooo innacurate! Nelson and some other friends of mine can agree that there is no truth to this statement. The only thing close is some earlier Winsor McCay cartoons, but in some, even though he drew each frame at a time, it was not as bad as mister Danny seems to think (well maybe not bad but with flaw)

This is not even worth thinking about, and the energy used to make the 'wobble' effect is just a waste. Go watch 70 hours of 30s cartoons Mr. Antonucci!

The animation in Ed Edd n Eddy's fourth season is superior to any attempt by any American studio in the past 50 years. Third season almost as much.

People obsess over the designs so much that they are blind to how amazing the storyboarding, layouts, and timing are. Of course if we were judging the show back in season 2, I'd hardly be on the same side of the fence. Perhaps people only see episodes from the first 2 seasons and that's why they get so angry.

In terms of storyboaring I have never seen a bad shot in the past two seasons of Ed Edd n Eddy. So many shots make me stare in wonder, at how they can get 10-12 characters onscreen and not look cluttered or confusing. The perspectives are so awesome, they're as dynamic as Dexter USED to be.

In terms of layouts there are so many funny drawings. The use of squash and stretch is unparallelled. People's expressions and takes are absurdly funny. I just have to constantly applaud every pose, because they are just consistently on the mark in seasons 3 and 4. Again and again.

In terms of timing, it's just unchallengable. No other American cartoon comes close right now. It's Yeson's best work. I also love the sound foleying, how they find completely unrelated sound effects for things that actually feel incredibly appropriate.

John K insulted Ed Edd n Eddy, calling it nothing more than crayon drawings. Hah. He wish he could do this good.

Exactly- it looks like no other cartoon on TV right now. Any artist that can take the squiggling of Dr. Katz and mix it with exaggerated, old-school cartoon movements successfully deserves a standing ovation. John K insulted Ed Edd n Eddy, calling it nothing more than crayon drawings. Hah. He wish he could do this good. You know, the more I read about John K, the less respect I have for him. I don't like Tiny Toons either. John K is sort of justified with his comments on that show, seeing as he worked on it. That whole thing was a mess of crappy lumpy animation, crappy timing, and recycled poses from Pup Named Scooby Doo. Just yuck.

In fact I pretty much hate all of Spielburg's toons except for Freakazoid because Freakazoid had good timing and delivery. Tiny Toons: bad. Animaniacs: terrible. Pinky & the Brain: mediocre. Pinky & the Brain & Elmyra: ugh.

The animation was pretty slow and lumpy throughout. Keep in mind that the early 90s were pretty lumpy for cartoons on the whole. Wasn't until 1994 or 1995 that animation started getting more stable, more tight, and controlled.

I liked Tiny Toons and Pinky and the Brain(hated Animaniacs though), but its been so long that my opinions might have changed.

As for the Eds, I love the show, I agree that the earlier episodes are weaker(I still think they're good, but no where near the quality of Season 3, much less Season 4) The animation on the show is simply amazing, watching a 4th season episode, I just look in awe, because it has superb animation and the style of the show is something I absolutely love.

I guess part of the reason I like the show might be relating to it a little bit. I grew up in a similar environment(no wacky scames, but you know what I mean), and it makes me feel a little nostalgic, while providing great dynamic characters, and hilarious plots.

O: What about music, or television? Is anyone producing anything new that you enjoy?

JK: There are cartoons that have elements of things I think are good. Powerpuff Girls has some really imaginative color in it, and that's a first for cartoons. Color has been pretty crappy for the longest time in cartoons. And it's controlled color, not random, very well thought out. A lot of the Cartoon Network cartoons are much better than in the previous decade, that's for sure. Cow And Chicken has absolutely beautiful drawings in it. Then there are some that are just... I'm not going to name them, but they look like three-year-olds draw them. I don't have any interest in that stuff. They're holding back history.

Besides what's already been said, I think part of the appeal of the show comes from the mixture of sanity and insanity. For example, pretty much any character on the show is realistic (Kevin - jerk, Jonny - weird kid, Jimmy - wimpy kid, etc.), to the point where a lot of the people in this thread have mentioned it reminds them of their childhood. Now, take that element, and put in the slapstick element which is a big part of the show (Trees falling on people, exaggerated expressions, etc.); on some shows the mixture of these two elements would result in a disaster, but EEnE somehow makes it work really really well.

Random thing, but I love how the show does that.

Right now, EEnE is on the top of my list. I love the animation of the characters, like I heard before, it gives them a lively, human appearance by always moving and twiching. They use great colors to set the mood, personality, and surroundings. They also have the face expressions set just right for certain moods.. Got to love the sound effects, Ed's orangutan SE is always my fave.

It's just too bad that it's harder (and I think more expensive) to do this type of animation, I'd like to see it in other toons.

Obviously, this cartoon is not as true as Peanuts, as great as the Simpsons, as ironic as Family Guy, as politically correct as South Park (attacking both sides and all), or as brilliant as Futurama. Also not as well written and suspenseful as Teen Titans or as funny and well thought up as KND.

The Eds are dumb in my opinion. They pull of a lot of stuff for a small setting. But that's just it. It is just dumb. It's based off of the same thing every time. And people say that it's funny to see just how stupid Ed is. Well I say about as stupid as the show itself.

And oranges don't taste as sour as grapefruit, or aren't as red as an apple, or aren't as meaty like a burger. Sure tastes like an orange though. Which is weird, because it's an orange and according to your logic, it is to taste like everything that it is not intended to be.

Except the last part of your analogy. Which it is supposed to be funny. However, if you find KND the shining example of CC humor, then I don't really know what to say.

EEnE is inane slapstick humor set with cliche and established characters which come together quite nicely. It isn't supposed to be as "suspensefull" as Teen Titans is, or as "great" as the Simpsons, it's supposed to entertain you with it's writing and visuals.

There's this insane yet comfortable logic that they stick to. You never know where they're going with any of this and yet once you get there the path you took feels right. It did take me a long time to appreciate it but I got there.

They're able to write funny things that the characters do rather then write funny things and try to force the characters into it. Even in the episode where the Eds try to find the meaning of everything their characters always seem so perfect.
Let's not forget the Kanker sisters. My sister always seemed to have a few of those as friends. *shudder*

And to the Strawberry Jam, I don't think you got my point. I'd rather watch it than nothing at all or some PBS dork show (e.g. Aurthur), but it has no entertainment value to me at all. In fact, I don't think it has much in it's right mind.

BTW, I agree, the animation is fine and the guy who writes the stuff is learning that slapstick is not close to the best value of entertainment, unless there's something else too it.

Example: In Family Guy, Peter opens an airplane door to see what happens. He gets sucked out and falls out of the plane with his crude laugh.

I can't say as I'm terribly fond of EE&E, but the show does have it's good points, for one thing I'm a fan of Antonucci's earlier work, specifically The Brothers Grunt, I don't know why but it just appealed to me, secondly some of the dialogue is just quirky and fun, for instance, Kevin and Eddy's exchanges in the rocket car episode, but most of all, that show has some damn catchy music and it's that and the stupid randomness that appeals to me, so much like TBG

it's that and the stupid randomness that appeals to me, so much like TBG Well, I wouldn't say that the show is that random - obviously shows like Invader Zim and Family Guy are more random - but it absolutely does have its points where it just goes its own ways.

I remember reading in interviews about the creator's memories of growing up in Toronto (wow, that's a long way from Vancouver) and how he'd do all this random stuff with friends...he must have had a fun time growing up!
