View Full Version : How do you pronounce you name?

As satisfaction to a minor curiosity, I thought it might be interesting and mildly useful to provide pronouncitory guides to our respective screen names. Some, such as LuckyBob, are reasonably obvious, other, like mine, are potentially confusing.

Delthayre [dElTejr\]

Ermmm...I don't imagine that'll be very helpful to people who don't know X-SAMPA (http://home.swipnet.se/escape/conlanglinks/xsamchart.gif), so I'll have to improvise.

Delthayre DEL-thayr (<e> as in etch, <ay> as in day).

Lucky Bob

Actually, my name rhymes with "Smelt".

Although, I would like to implore you people again, IT'S LUCKY BOB! With the SPACE! "luckybob1985" is the name I had in my newbie days! Sure, the confusion is understandable, but it's SPELLED WITH A SPACE NOW! You don't call The Landstander "Dr. Weird" anymore, do you? It's the same thing! Stop calling me LuckyBob! The spacebar is your friend! Teh gr8 white diety-of-your-choice. USE IT!!!!!!1111117777oneoneoneonesevenseven

*sigh*

There ya go, I've gone and worn myself out now with a rant.

I need a hug.

Or some beef stew.

Which is the best thing ever.

Great, now I'm a plagarist.

Kill me, already. :(

Simple eh?

Magwheel
02-24-2004, 10:23 AM
It's pronounced Thibodeau. Tee..... bodo.

There, now I've plagiarized, too. :D

But seriously, it's Mag as in Maggie, then wheel as in wheelie, or Wheeler Boulevard, or wheel.

I've always insisted that it, like my real name (Maggie, that is), be pronounced with a long A, so that Mag rhymes with fade. But now I'm realizing that it's actually better the way some people say it, having Mag rhyme with fad. :o

I'm glad you made this thread, Delthayre, because some names are indeed "potentially confusing." But now I'm wondering, "del whayre?!" :p

I always thought of my name as "Ten-shun" (tension). But I don't think when people refer to me as "Tien" they are saying "Ten", but rather "Tea-in". So I guess most people would pronounce it "Tea-in-shin". :(

I need a new name.

Well, for some reason I always say it with a sort of Russian accent, TYEN-shin.

The only thing that bugs me is my surname (which most know here through DKA) being Mclean which is Scottish and pronounced Ma-Clane and not Ma-Clean - which is the bad way.

SJJ is just how you would say any initials. S-J-J...

Interesting, my Grandmother's maiden name is McClain, an anglicized form of MacLean. In fact, my mother and her sister along with my grandmother and her sisters went to a MacLean clan meet two or three years ago. Theoretically, we might be distant relatives. I do so love trivium.

To introduce the element of real name, which for my part I don't mind, mine, Brommer, can be pronounced two ways. Either BRA-mur, which is anglicized, or with the <ö> sound found in German, French, and some other Germanic languages (and I don't believe French is germanic, despite the implication of the way I structured that sentence).

This is based upon some, and I admit the evidence is a little thin, attestations that the name was originallz spelt Brömmer. This is actually how I spell it. It's fun because of the fits computers have with processing it. I get a lot of things addressed to Mr. Paul Br÷mmer and the like.

But never BROH-mur, I hate that.

Tallaid-Pronounced, Tull (Just say the word pull with a "t" instead of a "p") + Aid (I hope you don't need help with that part)
I really don't know why I spelled my name nothing like I pronounce it but I've used that name on the internet for 4 years now so it's gonna stay that way. Also people seem to come up with really funny insults based on it, for example I was playing Gunbound one day and some person just randomly said to me "I bet you're actually really short" I burst out laughing, I'm not sure if they were even trying to be insulting, also I've heard others like, "Short-not all that helpful", I thought that one was funny too.

I'm not going to say how my username is pronounced- that'd be insulting your intelligence. ;) But as for my real name (Ian Lueck), it's pronounced E-in Leck, NOT I-an or E-yon or Luck or Loo-eck.

No one can pronounce my last name, for whatever reason, despite it being the most Irish last name save O'*.

In fact, one has given up and has decided to call me Mac'N'Cheese.

Not that you guys care.

PS: Strawberry Jam is pretty clear.

Well, I should think it fairly obvious how to pronounce my username here. :p People have trouble with my real-life last name, though. It's "Nicodemo", but the problem is even though it looks Greek (in which case you'd pronounce it "Nih-KOH-deh-mo", which most people do), it's actually an Italian variant, so you actually pronounce it "Nih-kuh-DEE-mo".

Most of you have Irish last names, cool! Mine is Polish/German. And it's eleven letters long  crazy eh?

My username is very easy to announce (unless you're an idiot): Candy Seventeen (think of it as someone's real name). As for my real name, the "i" in my real name has two dots on it (which, in French means to pronounce a vowel twice or something like that). So my real name is pronounced Can-i-ees (there's a long i and a long e sound)

Mine's pronounced just the way it looks, I guess. It's just Wah-tah-gah-shee. Nothing much. :p

My real name's incredibly easy, too.... I don't think I've ever had anyone pronounce it wrong or anything. I don't know. ^^ Fwoosh!

It's interesting to see how some of these names are pronounced. I was reading some wrong:sweat:

Good Ol' Batmanuel!
02-28-2004, 03:37 PM
Good, as in...good.
Ol', as in "old"
Batmanuel*, as in it's a guy's name with "Bat" stuck on the front. He's kinda sorta a superhero from The City. Try to say it with a Spanish accent.

*The character was originally called Die Fledermaus on the animated version of The Tick, but had to be changed due to legal reasons for the live action show. That's DEE FLAY-DER-MOUSE (or mouze). It's German for "the bat". :)

That's an interesting choice, but as something of a celtophile, I admire it.

Come to think of it, how people mispronounce names is likely more interesting than the proper pronounciations. In your case, Eibhlin, I would have pronounced it AIV-lin.

I wonder if it's permissible to prounounce it with a velar fricative as in Bach. That's how I've always done it.

And as I recall, and Auroch is a kind of Bovine or at least Cow-Like creature, but I think there extinct now. But that's off the top of my head.

Everybody's pronounciation of my name: Ee-man-u-el
My family's pronounciation" Eh-man-uel
My dog's pronounciation: Bark or Sniff.

Everyone except my family pronounces my name in the "English" way of my name but my family pronounces it in the "Spanish" way obviously because I'm Latino.

I think you are probably right, since I saw it also pronounced ev LEEN on the Hylit Irish names website.

Most people mispronounce my actual name, since they cannot get past the idea that the first "E" is silent.
