I'm Fooly Coolied out, I saw three out of the four runs on AS and have watched it on DVD 1 2/3 times. I might watch it with my friend who is a little into this stuff, but besides that... it will be a while before I watch Naota and CO.'s adventures again.
I, too, have watched FLCL many, many times, but I'll probably watch it again. =(

Crud, how are they gonna show the last episode? I mean, last time they cut out the credits entirely and it still ran way over. And aside from the Big O finale time-cut fiasco, we've seen that not even Cowboy Bebop is safe from their new time constraints. How the heck is this gonna work?
I'm not looking forward to this.
...but of course, I've already seen it. Ha.

NO! They can't cut the ending, no epilogue? No haunting image of the guitar string vibrating? God, they better not end the show when Haraku goes off to you no where. I hope they don't but they are the people who cut the last scene from the Big O finale without even bothering to show the famous We Have Come to Terms text. Damnit Sirlemming you've gotten me to watch the last episode to see if they cut anything out.

When in April?
I was thinking it would be a good show to fill out Saturday, there's only 6 episodes so putting it on once a week would be good. That is what Action Saturday is going to be right? Just once a week shows, movies, specials and shows they want to get more mileage out of like the Inuyasha premeires?

Ugh...I really don't like FLCL. I'm almost tempted to say I hate it. I think it's the most overrated show to ever air on Adult Swim. Well, Home Movies is probably overrated more, but anyways, I'm definitely not watching FLCL again.
If you're wondering WHY I can't stand FLCL so much. Well, basically the plot is incredibly simple but they choose to make it incredibly confusing just so people have to watch it 3 or 4 times to understand it. This is why the mainstream will never accept anime. When they keep on coming out with crap that has no noticeable plot, but requires viewers to watch the series over and over again to finally find a plot, I say it's no wonder only nerds understand this stuff. And before anyone flames me and says that I only like things that are spoon fed to me, that's not what I'm saying at all. Citizen Kane is a classic movie that if you watch it 3 or 4 times you'll notice more things every time you watch it. But, the difference between Citizen Kane is that Citizen Kane can be understood and enjoyed very easily the first time you watch it. See, while Citizen Kane hides a layer of complexity beneath a guise of simplicity, FLCL hides simplicity beneath a guise of complexity.
Maybe comparing FLCL to a classic American movie isn't a great idea, so I'll try to compare to another anime. Cowboy Bebop appears to have a very simple story and can be enjoyed rather easily, but there is complexity beneath the surface. FLCL takes hard work to find something enjoyable about it and once you find out what it's all about you realize how simplistic it is.

In FLCL it seems you enjoy the show by first understanding the complexity (at least for me, I figured out a lot of the hidden messages before I got why robots were popping out of people's heads and eating a small boy) the stuff about Naota and the little messages seem more important than the actual story. Wait a minute that didn't make sense.
How about this it be pretty to look at.

FLCL is an OVA series made by Gainax for serious anime fans. That's like Otaku no Video is not for anime beginners and the faint of heart. Or typical Kevin Smith films for the mainstream. It was never meant for TV for everyone to enjoy. It's just that CN aired it because it's a Williams Street favorite and ASA has a disproportionate anime audience, not because of ASA's mainstream audience (which it also has).
And many stories are simple at the core. Even classic Shakespeare illustrates that. It's all in the execution.

I don't consider myself a serious anime fan. I only watch what gets put on TV, and I try not to get too much in the "everything Japanese is better than its American counterpart" mindset that a lot of "serious" anime fans have. But I love FLCL. It doesn't matter whether or not you're familiar with anime; it's just an enjoyable show.
How I explain it is, it's sort of a coming-of-age thing. With robots. Half of the plot doesn't make much sense, but that's only because they purposely keep us -- and Naota -- in the dark. Really, all that stuff doesn't matter too much, although it can be fun to decipher afterwards. The most important aspect of the show is that Naota lived in a boring, repetitive world until Haruko came in and shook things up, causing him to step out of his youthful comfort zone and start to become a man. A lot of the stuff that happens isn't really "plot", but just childhood experiences that we can relate to (school plays, disgusting food, etc.). I think that's really what it's all about. The plot is secondary, and mainly serves the purpose of being this totally crazy thing that happens in a really boring world.

Yuck.
I just imagined them cutting "Ride on Shooting Star" down to like 3 seconds.
I'm scared now.

Well, you know, it's not like we really got that much set up about Naota living in a boring world. I mean, didn't Haruka show up within the first 10 minutes? I don't really have a problem with the plot being secondary or not important, I have a problem with the show pretending that the plot is important and complex when it isn't. I mean, Kill Bill for instance, is a great movie, and it has a simple plot, and I love it because it doesn't try to be anything else. It doesn't pretend to be complex.
But, I really would like to know how non-anime fans respond to this show. If anyone has stories please share. My only experience was when my roommate was watching Family Guy and FLCL came on and he changed the channel after about five minutes without a word from either of us.

I'm not really into anime at all, but I love FLCL and I watch As primarily for the comedy. Occasionally I watch Bebop, Trigun, or Inuyasha, but I don't make a point of watching those. Back when FLCL was on last time, I made a point to watch it. And I'm not really sure why. Something about the show just appealed to me and I really liked it. I loved the music, thats for sure.
I remember the first time I saw it, I think it was after Family Guy ended and I just hadn't turned the TV off. The first episode of FLCL came on, and I watched the whole thing and I just thought it was great. It didn't feel like a typical anime to me. Even after all 6 episodes aired, I still wanted to watch them all again. As I mentioned earlier, I loved the music, and the more I think about it, I think the music is large part of why it appealed to me. It didn't just seem like typical background music. It stood out more, and really complimented the scene well and just added a lot to the emotion of the show.
Well, that's my opinion of it anyway, and I'm not really fan of anime. Even still after watching this, other anime doesn't really appeal to me any more than it did before I saw FLCL. For some reason, I just really liked FLCL. In my opinion it's an awesome show and I'll be tuning in again.

At least it can't be repeated over and over again every other week
it's something I don't mind watching even though I found it hard to understand the first time.

I'm so weird...
I've seen FLCL 7 times and got the DVDs in September. And I want to watch it again. I'm getting Happy Bivouac and plan to purchase the OSTs, the poster, and Little Busters when it's available here. I dream about FLCL. Actually, no. But I've had bran-new lovesong play in my dreams... And that's what counts. I guess.

I didn't say any people cannot enjoy it. It's just not one of the priorities when the show was made. Kevin Smith has the same philosophy: the mainstream can enjoy his films all they want (or not), still doesn't mean he made it for them - his priority is his fellow GenXers. Gainax is the same thing: they appeal more to the knowing fans - but is not limited by it. So if the "mainstream" doesn't enjoy it, they don't care much because it was not meant for them.

I think Flcl's probably one of the best anime's out there. And I don't even like Anime that much. I don't like big extensive long term anime's like DBZ since I have the attention span of an 8 year old.

They could've easily put them on two DVDs with three episodes each, but they want money.
