Naming man boobs is just wrong. Especially when asking a young boy to name them.

The stage play looks like a Monty Python sketch, Ouch that must have hurt, Fenton personality number 3: creative mind, heh heh Mcguirk is wearing a bra, I thought this is a bleep less, Jason & Melissa arguing, Jason ditch the killing idea please, the ending is pretty good

my score is 3.5

Worst. Home Movies. Episode. Ever.

At least for the moment.

Seriously, couldn't Fenton and the boyfriends' screentime be lessened? And does the show really have to sink to disgusting breast jokes? And when did Melissa start acting as stupid as Jason?

Well, at least I'll never have to see it again.

Well. It was definetly not the best... infact, I'll say it may rank upon some of the worst, but the worst HM is still enjoyable. McGuirk was a waste. I... honestly don't even know what to make of it. As usual, he played well with Paula, who'se story wasn't all that great either. Paula and McGuirk are great characters, but not to be left to their own ventures.

The rest was great. Fenton owned it, hard.

This episode just disturbed me. Manboobs just don't belong in animation.

There were some funny bits though.

"Cut! Jason get Fenton a soda."
"Action! Melissa get Fenton a soda."

Brendon/Fenton = Good. Fenton freaking out was flat out hilarious.

Paula/Boyfriend = Okay. Some good lines, nothing all that memorable, but still enjoyable.

McGuirk's plotline = One of the worst things HM has ever done.

"Heart Smashers" was consistently laugh-causing, which I rightfully expect from this series, although some scenes felt odd. I had trouble buying the Brendon and Fenton relationship, although the use of the idea of breaking up was amusing. Paula's side-story was up to the task, but not remarkable. McGuirk's did feel rather tacked-on, but not bothersomely intrusive. However, I think I could have done without it and McGuirk probably deserves better. I did rather enjoy Jason's desire to kill someone. But that too felt like something adapted to Home Movies rather than something actually in the style of the show.

It was a very funny episode all in all, but there were no strongly memorable and remarkable settings or ideas. It evens out to par for the course, thus a *** out of *****.

Jason seemed to be enjoying one part of that movie a lot.
The movie was the best part of the whole thing
The man boobs were weird, thank god they just became flabbbly instead of exploding which I was praying they wouldn't do. That would of been gross
The whole chest thing got me scared, at the time I was watching the episode I was working out... my chest. I don't want man boobs!
I give it a B, wasn't great, wasn't bad either.

Okay, this one, while funny, left me confused.

Now Paula REALLY needed to break up with weirdo, which she did twice, but of course they go for another date due to it being funny.

But I really don't see the point of Brendon making up with Fenton. Fenton deserved that since he first showed up on the show and it was ruining everything. WHY?!?

Anyways, still pretty funny. Hopefully they don't use Fenton as a regular though. Shore Leave was funny and its good to see him get his every now and then like his birthday ep and last week's, but the guy is something you really don't want to use all the time like Clarence, as much as I liked the last Brak eps as they started to get better but then got cancelled.

P.S. Can pecs REALLY give out? :p I, mean their the chest muscles right? Wouldn't he need those to fully use his arms? Aah, the oh-so-illogical ways of animation.

okay Coach eating off his man-boobs is now the creepiest thing I've ever seen on Cartoon network (Him licking Professor Utonium was the first unil now)

I thought it was a step down from the last two episodes. McGuirk's part sucked, the breast jokes disgusting. I wish they had given him a different part, or even left him out of this episode(*GASP*). The boyfriend wasn't all that funny either, except when he was talking to Brendon.

On the other hand, parts of it were good. Fenton was good as always. The 'break up' things were funny, because of the context of it. Fenton's attitude was great. The auditions were alright as well, and Jason being clueless, and also a cannibal.

Also, it was nice to see the group making a movie again, and Fenton annexing the movie. The main plot was centered around the movie, which was a nice change of pace. So, it had goods and bads. Overall, it was a step down though. I don't mind the swearing(as long as the situation is right), but the boob jokes should stay far away from Home Movies.

Hello, I'm HomeMoviesFan's secretary.

HMF isn't here right now, but he did see the new Home Movies episode "The Heart Smashers". Here are his comments as he noted to me:

HMF doesn't like man boobs.

HMF likes Fenton.

HMF thinks he's hilarious.

HMF thought Simon was weird.

HMF liked Jason approving Walter and Perry.

He thought that was funny.

HMF says that this episode was OK.

But no more McGuirk boobs. The bra was disturbing as well.

Oh, yes, and HMF also calls says he doesn't feel like doing a Super Site quality review tonight.

Maybe tomorrow.

Thank you, and this has been HomeMoviesFan's secretary...

This was a pretty bad episode all around. I was hoping for an episode to match or exceed "Bye, Bye Greasy", but was flat out disappointed. McGuirk's storyline was dull and disgusting. The Paula / boyfriend storyline was unfunny and just seemed like filler. However the parts containing Fenton / Brendon were enjoyable enough to bring it to an average level of a C. Hopefully, next week will be an improvement over this.

I thought this episode was freakin' awesome. McGuirk's man boobs didn't bother me, probably because adultswim.com is my homepage and I his man boobs every time I started Internet Explorer. Fenton was annoying as usual, but I've learned to respect that. This episode had what most WS shows have, constant funny. Not absolute hilarity, but enough to keep me smiling. I rate this as the best HM episode of the season so far. Keep it up.

I feel that McGuirk stole somthing from me, and it sure as hell wasn't time...

Those man boobs...WHY?!?!?!

I mean now I think they can show lady boobs because those things were, AH I can't even think about them without crawling into a corner curling up into the fetal position and rocking back and fourth....

What the hell was that episode?

I've never been so impatient to have an HM episode end. None of the plotlines were funny and the stupid peripheral characters took more screen time than Jason or Melissa. Paula and Brendon had the most interesting lines but nothing really got going anywhere because of the weak subject material and limited character interaction. McGuirk's storyline was the worst side-plot he's had yet. And considering how much I usually like the Fenton episodes, this had WAY too much Fenton, and the relationship with him and Brendon makes no sense considering how Brendon has made a point in The Party, Shore Leave, and Renaissance how he doesn't like him at all. Home Movies is the only reason I still watch Adult Swim at any regular interval and I have respect for Soup2Nuts for making 2 of my favorite TV shows ever, but this is one just turned out bad. Boring, unfunny, and predictable. I'm sure once I see it again it'll grow on me, but considering how season 3 epsiodes were more or less instantly fantastic (Shore Leave!), this one is my least favorite HM epsisode yet.

Grade: D+

This episode was crap!

Highlights included the subplot with McGuirk and his pecs, Brendon's convo with McGurk about that, and Fenton and Brendon "breaking up".

Out of 5, i give it 4.

I really thought Heart Smashers was pretty good. The dueling break up plots with Paula and Brendon were pretty solid. Fenton freaking out on Brendon was pretty funny in a Fatal Attraction sort of way…though the implied homosexual connotation to their relationship was less then subtle, I think it worked overall. Meanwhile, Paula can’t seem to get away from Simon, aka “Nancy Boy” which may or may not be a real life lesson for stopping women from breaking up with you fellas. For my viewing pleasure, laughing at someone that pathetic never gets old, particularly the scene and restaurant where Simon is crying until Paula agrees not to break up with him and even more so as he struggled to get furniture onto the pickup (Nancy Boy). McGuirk’s insane insistence on huge pecs, while at times disturbing, was pretty damned funny IMO, and it is something that his character was bound to do at some point. But let’s all agree that we never should have to see man boobs in that much detail…ever again on TV.

Overall, I give last nights episode a majority of arbitrarily selected symbols out of a larger number of arbitrary selected symbols, indicating that it was good.

Bleh. I thought the Paula subplot was the only good bit in this episode. McGuirk's subplot was just disturbing, not funny.
The Brendon / Melissa / Jason / Fenton subplot started out okay with the septopus, but as soon as Fenton walked onscreen, it took a nose dive into an empty swimming pool. It wasn't a bad idea, but it was just plain poorly thought out. A Brendon in character would never invite Fenton to make a "movie film," and if he were stupid enough to do so, a Melissa in character would've reminded him how much he hates Fenton and how Fenton always ruins everything.
Two characters horribly out of character does not good Home Movies comedy make. Now, if Fenton's presence had been imposed on Brendon against his will because of Fenton's overprotective mother or Paula or somebody else dangling a carrot in front of Brendon's nose (maybe Paula promising to buy him that fisheye lens or something if he lets Fenton in the movie), that might have made for an interesting plot.

More than anything else, I felt this episode lacked focus-- it just seemed to have too much going on to give any single plot line the time it needed to develop. Downplay the McGuirk plot and give him maybe just one scene interacting with Brendon and/or Melissa and/or Jason on the soccer field, rework the Brendon subplot to put him and Melissa back in character, and give more screen time to Paula's consternation over what to do about the Boyfriend Who Won't Take Hint, and keep the Boyfriend / Brendon scene exactly as it was, and maybe you've got a passable (if slightly average) episode of Home Movies. This was not passable-- this was just dumb.

Overall Grade: D+

It was funny. I never really liked Fenton until now. Melissa and Jason ultimately realizing what a liability he was to the film was great. Brendan's relationship with Fenton has evolved into something complex which is cool. My only gripe is that Paula and Coach McGuirk's plot's were boring and weird respectively. Still I loved Walter and Perry's awful audition and Jason and Melissa hiring them anyways to Brendan's chagrin.

Stewie
01-26-2004, 01:39 PM
Bah! That was half of a decent episode. The individual subplots were okay to begin with, but didn't seem to have enough to last an entire episode. They got boring quick.
McGuirk's thing was weird. Of course the man boobs were gross, especially when they died. That whole thing seemed out of character for McGuirk. When has he over shown a predisposition for body-building (or any kind of physical activity, he doesn't even run at soccer practice). It was just another crazy adventure for McGuirk to have. I hope he doesn't spend every episode getting into some strange new activity. That's what Homer Simpson does now. And Homer isn't funny anymore.

If people (national audiences that didn't tune in last week; <297,000?, ouch)were turned off by "Camp", they're never going to watch again after "Heart Smashers."

I'm going to stick in my tape and watch "Renaissance." That shall soothe me.

Let me put this in a way you will all understand:

first season > thrid season > second season > Heart Smashers

There were some moments I liked. The "Cut. Melissa get Fenton a soda." thing kinda seemed first season-ish. I liked that part...and...that was about it.

The chemistry, I think it would be called, between Brendon, Jason, Melissa and Fenton seemed very out of place.

Melissa did seem a little stupid in this episode.

The swearing wasn't as bad though.

That Simon guy SHOULD be killed.

And what the hell was there a dead-line on the movie for? They didn't explain that.

Of all the boobs we could have seen on HM, they had to be McGuirks...*shivers in disgust*

Rating:  Sucky. Thats all I have to say.

Delthayre
01-26-2004, 01:57 PM
The one instance of swearing in "Heart Smashers" didn't bother me at all. It seemed reasonably in-place. Walter and Perry don't have a lot of limits on what they can do and still seem-in character, so, "this is ********," worked well enough in that seen. I don't think it would have been any better or worse if something else had been done.

TacoHunter
01-26-2004, 02:34 PM
All 3 sub plots work well alone, but they didn't come together and tie in to one another. And what could have really helped is if the movie was a reflection of the whole "breaking up" plot. I find the movies are the funniest when its just a different take on the same kind of plot. I think the 3 plots could have really worked if they had tied in to one another better and ended screwing one another.

I laughed a whole lot, but...it just didn't work as well as it should have.

Home Movies was pretty funny this week.

Fenton was annoying.
McGuirk's pecs were hilarious.
The Boyfriend struggling to carry the table was funny.

Overall a B-. My least favorite of the new ones so far.

Mynd Hed
01-26-2004, 05:56 PM
And what the hell was there a dead-line on the movie for? They didn't explain that.
Yes they did-- Brendon calls it an "internal" (i.e. self-imposed) deadline. That was part of the humor, they're killing themselves to meet a deadline that's not externally imposed, and nobody even proposes that they extend or just ignore it. Actually, I think that was one of the few jokes that actually succeeded, but you kind of had to be awake to catch it.

01-26-2004, 06:19 PM
Mm. I did not like the majority of this episode. I think too too much of Fenton, not enough plot in Paula's corner, and a weird, slightly off-putting situation for McGuirk. First cross-dressing, now enormous pecs that look like breasts...is there something you're not telling us, John? (Though I liked the cross-dressing; it was funny. This, not so much.)

This ep just seemed like an incoherant mess. Fenton is good comedy spice, especially as Brendon's foil, but only when used sparingly. Y'know? I would have preferred his unhinged ranting when Brendon "dumped" him to have ended with him declaring himself Brendon's mortal enemy. Or something. I tell you, the only bit that felt like HM's groove was the discussion everyone was having while Scary Needy Boyfriend was trying to lift furniture. Especially Jason's mad hinting. That's the only part I laughed out loud at, and that IS a rarity. I just felt this ep's script could have run through a few more drafts. Two of five *

I just don't want this to influence people too much...ANY show ever has bad episodes here and there (or a season or two. see: Buffy). You just have to stick around...I hope people do. I still think HM is the best show on AS and I want it to get the success it deserves.

I'm torn.

On the one hand it was a nice return to form after "Bye Bye Greasy" which I didn't like at all. Plus the standard Home Movies "awkwardly responding to difficult and uncomfortable situations in life" (Paula/Boyfriend Fenton/Brendan) kinda felt like a return to form.

The Sceptopus movie was pretty funny (The random echo effects cracked me up), until the Fenton overkill. Fenton is like Shannon--episodes featuring him put my teeth on edge.

On the other hand, a lot of this episode seemed too weird when it didn't need to be. The McGuirk stuff could have been done without quite such an extreme taken (The initial "boobs vs pecs" argument was pretty funny) and the episode sorta fell flat after the commercial break until the "soda" thing followed by the hysterical "let's kill him and eat him" argument (Once again Jason saves a lacklustre ep. How about that?) so I can't say I really liked it wholeheartedly.

Somewhat on the fence with this one. I give it a C

Bleh...by far the weakest of the season thus far. I hate when they waste to much time on side characters like Fenton. It's like Bender-he's funny with his gags but episodes centered around him generally suck.

Not much of an episode by any means, but for some reason the phrase "video film" never fails to make me laugh. "WHAT ABOUT THE VIDEO FILM, BRENDON?" Poor taste, I guess. :D

This was quite possibly my least favorite Home Movies episode. Was there some funny stuff? Yes. I actually really enjoyed the storyline with Simon and Paula.
McGuirk's "pecs" were very weird, and the aftermath of watching him run around with basically saggy breasts wasn't very funny, just disturbing.
And the main story, with Brendon and Fenton, didn't work for me. Because Fenton's an ass and nobody likes him. So why did they in this episode - even in the beginning? That kind of plot has been done before and would have worked a lot better with Jason.
Funny moments, though: McGuirk and Brendon's initial conversation, Fenton saying "videofilm," and Jason suggestingn killing people.
Hope this is the lowest episode this season. Looking forward to Sunday!

Arguably the worst episode of Home Movies EVER. The Brendon/Fenton "relationship" was kinda funny, but everything else... well... sucked. McGuirk had the worst subplot in the serise history. Not only that, but he looked very creepy with his pecs, and even more so when they were deflated. The only perk I can think of is that Paula got a storyline, and wasn't pushed back to a tiny chunk of time like in the last two weeks (even then, it wasn't that good). Overall, it's really upsetting considering that the last two weeks (especially last week) was hysterical.

Score:
1/5

I thought posted my review but I guess I didn't. I have to agree with most peeps here, it was the worse of the series. I hated the whole Paula blind date thing and Brendon breakin up with Fenton. It felt forced and very annoying. The only thing that kept this episode afloat was is McGurk and his amazing pecks. That was hilarious. Him blowing them and asking that guy to help him with his bra. I cracked up.

Thats the only reason I'd give that episode a C

If McGurk wasn't in it. I'd give it a D-

Same thing happened to me. Here's my review...

So in conclusion, this episode was very strange. I did not like Fenton. McGuirk's storyline was screwed up. Brendon seemed to like Fenton too much and Paula dating was weird.

Overall, the strongest soryline was Paula and Simon. So, I guess that's my favorite part of this episode.

McGuirk's "Pecs" were really creepy and were more creepy blown out.

Overall, this episode was fine. I hated Fenton and McGuirk's Pecs. Grade: B-
