Many have probobly not heard of this series, but it's very recent, and Vol.1 of the manga is currently out from Tokyo Pop, the animation has not been released stateside on DVD as of yet
Anyways it takes place in space, and chronicals the adventures of a space debris clean up crew, anyways after one mission almost ends up killing one of the team members, he evntualy developes a tangible alternate persona from the space radiation he is exposed too.

While I love Planetes (both the anime and manga), it's lack of action wouldn't make it ideal for Adult Swim...it's more like a realistic drama series.
I mean, there is some Sci-Fi, but it's more "realistic" Sci-Fi than giant, sprawling mecha battles. I imagine most viewers would be bored to tears and fall asleep cauze of it's slow pace...

Try nowhere (not SVES, AS, Toonami, or anywhere else), since again, I think Planetes lack of action (as in barely no action) would probably not be suitable for CN, which mainly emphasizes action and comedy (blame it on people's short attention spans).
Not that PlanetES is not a good show, I'm a big PlanetES fan, and it does have some comedy and action on occassion...but nobody will ever confuse PlanetES for Trigun or Family Guy. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see this show on CN, but I just can't picture this type of show on CN...

Having seen only the first 2 episodes, I'd say that it doesn't really fit.
It doesn't have a lot of action, but it has some nice comedy and drama.
Really good character development too. I'll have to catch up...
But no, it doesn't really fit ANY of the blocks on CN, unfortunately. =(

Well they showed .hack which really doesn't have emphesis on action eitherThat's different, cauze that's a type of show CN could market (based on the games of course). Then again, I don't think the CN people realized what type of show they really had...in otherwords, I don't think they expected so much talking from the show :p
Even I was surprised by the lack of action...then again, I have more patience, so I didn't mind that there wasn't a lot of action, I still liked the show, but a lot of people did mind that it was so slow-paced (judging by all the .Hack complaining I heard)...

Yep. Not juvenile enough for Adult Swim.

Yep. Not juvenile enough for Adult Swim.I wouldn't say that, jsut because a show has a slow pace doesn't make it more mature, compared to Witch Hunter Robin that is impending WHR balances the dialoge and action very nicely, and just because the show has some action doesn't really make it juvenile...
Yep. Not juvenile enough for Adult Swim.
Sad. Sounds like a good show.
Tanabe's a cutie, but I have to go with the other's take, not enough action. It's a shame though since Planetes is a great show.
It would be nice if some other serious network would take a foray into anime and bring it over stateside. Planetes offers a really good, serious take on space in the future, would be nice if a channel like A&E picked it up, they have imported a lot of British shows over here, why not a Japanese anime? Heh.

A&E, now that would be different.
That's what I thought, but hey, think about it. They show a lot of dramas. They're not against showing some action/thriller shows too, they play the British MI-5. They could air Planetes between their multiple airings of Biography. :p
Looking at the A&E programming schedule it seems like the network consists mostly of Biography, American Justice and Murder She Wrote... A little anime thrown into the mix on Monday evenings or something could spice up the network. You would probably have to air Planetes in an hour block with another similar show. Though off hand I really couldn't think of another show to pair it with, heheh.
Maybe TNT even. I can't think of any other networks who would consider giving it a shot. Anytime I think of other networks it seems like its the wrong target audience that network goes for or that the network probably wouldn't devote much marketing muscle to it and would drop it from the schedule after a few airings.
It's possible if CN could build up their own "legit" drama programming block to air at some point during the week, maybe even the hour before adult swim. That could allow the block to hit the grown-ups still awake at that time surfing the channels and wouldn't encroach on the "adults" who watch Adult Swim for action and comedy.

Planetes, though great (I got the first manga volume and I was sold on it right after reading the first chapter,) would definetely seem a little out of place on AS as it stands. If it were paired with another dramatic, intelligent show (Haibane Renmei would match it nicely, Texhnolyze would be a close match as well, and even Robin or Wolf's Rain might work with it) as part of a Drama pre-hour or as part of a future Saturday block, it might work nicely and grab a different piece of 18-34.
Realistically though, I see TechTV picking it up when once it's licenced stateside.

Announcer: We now return you to Planetes, stay tuned for The A&E Biography of Bill Cosby, then the sci-fi british Comedy Red Dwarf
It could happen!
They just need to make me head of programming...

I remember they had Judge on in the wee hours of the morning a long time ago.

I recently watched some of the Planetes Anime, I'd have to say it's really not quite cut out for Adult Swim. It's very different than the manga (almost to the extent where you can barely tell they are the same series the pacing and characterization is so different;) it drops a lot of hard-sci-fi and the drama, and is instead much more of a comedy remnicent of Nadesico or the british Sci-Fi Comedy Red Dwarf. SVES would be an ok home for Planetes, if weren't for Fee's chimneypipe smoking habit. So I guess it really doesn't quite have a home on AS (if stuck to the manga, it might have.)
My personal suggestion: Buy the manga. It's excellent.
